What Is the CAS / Credibility Interview?

Almost every UK Student Visa applicant is now invited to a credibility interview before or after submitting the visa. It is a short video call (10-25 minutes) with a UKVI officer or, before CAS issue, with the university's admissions team. The goal is simple: confirm you are a genuine student, that you understand your course, and that you can fund your studies.

Refusals on credibility grounds rose sharply in 2024-2025. The interview is now the single biggest reason for refusal after financial evidence.

  30. Sample Strong Answers

"Why did you choose this course?"

Weak: "Because it is a good course and the UK is famous for it."

Strong: "I completed my BSc in Computer Science with 70 percent and worked for 14 months as a junior data analyst at [Company]. My role exposed me to machine learning pipelines, but I lack the mathematical depth. The MSc Data Science at [University] covers advanced statistics, deep learning and a 60-credit capstone with industry partners like [Partner]. This directly addresses the gap in my career."

    "Why this university?"

Weak: "It is a famous university and has good rankings."

Strong: "Three reasons. First, the course is BCS-accredited, which is recognised by employers back home. Second, the university is ranked top 20 in the UK for Computer Science (Guardian 2026) and has a dedicated AI research centre led by Professor X. Third, the city of [City] has a lower cost of living than London (around GBP 1,100/month vs GBP 1,800), which fits my budget."

"Who is paying and how can they afford it?"

Strong: "My father is paying. He is a [job title] at [Employer] with an annual income of approximately PKR/INR [X], plus rental income from two properties. We have shown GBP [X] in his current account, held for 32 days, and have additional fixed deposits of PKR/INR [X] as backup. The tuition deposit of GBP [X] has already been paid on [date]."

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the CAS interview compulsory in 2026?+

Yes for most applicants. Universities conduct a pre-CAS credibility interview before issuing the CAS, and UKVI now interviews nearly all Student Visa applicants either online or in person. Refusing or failing to attend leads almost always to a refusal.

How long is a UK credibility interview?+

University pre-CAS interviews are 10-20 minutes. UKVI credibility interviews are typically 15-30 minutes by video call, occasionally up to 45 minutes if the officer has follow-up questions on funds or course choice.

What are the most common reasons for a credibility refusal?+

Vague answers about course choice, inability to name modules or fees, sponsor income that cannot realistically support the funds shown, contradictions with the written application, and clearly stating intent to settle permanently in the UK.

Can I use notes during the interview?+

No. Reading from notes is treated as a strong negative signal. You should know your course title, modules, fees, deposit paid, university city, sponsor's job and income from memory.

What documents should I have ready during the interview?+

Passport, CAS letter, unconditional offer letter, tuition deposit receipt, bank statements showing the 28-day balance, sponsor letter, and your transcripts. Keep them on the desk in case the officer asks you to hold one up to the camera.
