Conditional vs Unconditional Offer UK: What's the Difference

When you apply to a UK university, your offer letter will say either conditional or unconditional. The difference matters enormously: only an unconditional offer allows the university to issue your CAS, and only a CAS allows you to apply for a UK Student Visa. This guide explains both offer types, how to convert a conditional into an unconditional, and how each affects your firm and insurance choices on UCAS.

    What Is a Conditional Offer?

A conditional offer means the university wants to give you a place, but only if you meet certain conditions before you start. Typical conditions for international students include:

  1. Achieving specific final grades (e.g. "ABB at A-Level" or "60% CGPA")
  2. Meeting the English language requirement (e.g. "IELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0")
  3. Providing original transcripts and certificates
  4. Completing your current qualification by a stated date
  5. Paying the tuition deposit by a stated date
  6. Passing a credibility / academic interview
  7. Until you meet every condition, the place is not yours. Universities can and do withdraw conditional offers if conditions are not met by the deadline.

    What Is an Unconditional Offer?

An unconditional offer means the university has confirmed your place with no further conditions. You either already meet every requirement, or you have met all the conditions of a previous conditional offer. An unconditional offer is the only basis on which a UK university can issue a CAS for your Student Visa.

    How a Conditional Becomes Unconditional

The most common ways your conditional offer is converted to unconditional:

  8. Final results released — you upload your transcript/certificate to the university
  9. English test taken — you submit your IELTS/Duolingo/PTE score
  10. MOI letter accepted — your school confirms English-medium instruction
  11. Foundation/pre-sessional passed — the pathway provider confirms progression
  12. Documents verified — university completes its verification check
  13. Once converted, you receive an Unconditional Offer Letter. This is what you upload to the university's CAS request form.

Firm vs Insurance Choices (UCAS Undergraduate)

If you applied through UCAS for an undergraduate place, you choose:

  14. Firm (CF) — your first-choice university; you must meet their conditions
  15. Insurance (CI) — your backup; should have lower conditions than your firm
  16. If your firm is unconditional (UF), you do not need an insurance choice — the place is already yours. If your firm is conditional (CF), use a conditional offer with lower requirements as insurance.

    Unconditional Offers With Conditions

Confusingly, some universities issue an "unconditional offer" that still has small administrative conditions like sending a copy of your passport, paying the tuition deposit, or providing original transcripts. These are sometimes called "unconditional subject to deposit" or "conditional unconditional". UCAS does not have a separate code for these — they appear as Unconditional (U) on UCAS Hub.

    Unconditional Offers and the Visa

The unconditional offer letter alone is not enough for a UK Student Visa. You also need a CAS issued after the unconditional offer, proof of tuition payment (deposit minimum), a 28-day financial statement, an English test certificate (or MOI letter), academic transcripts and certificates, and a valid passport. The unconditional offer triggers CAS issue; the CAS triggers the visa application.

    Changed-Course Offers

If you applied for Course A but the university thinks Course B suits you better (e.g. Foundation Year instead of direct Bachelor's), they may issue a Changed-Course Offer. You must formally accept the new course before they can convert it to unconditional. The new offer may have different fees and conditions — read carefully before accepting.

What If I Cannot Meet My Conditions?

If your final grades or English score fall short, you have three options:

  17. Ask for discretion — many universities accept slightly lower grades if you are close
  18. Switch to Foundation / pre-sessional English — adds 3-12 months but keeps your university
  19. Enter UCAS Clearing — find a new place at a different university
  20. Email the admissions team immediately when results are released — discretion is more likely if you ask within 24 hours of results day.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a conditional and unconditional UK university offer?+

A conditional offer gives you a place only if you meet specified conditions (grades, English test, documents) before you start. An unconditional offer confirms your place with no further conditions and is the only basis on which a UK university can issue a CAS for your Student Visa.

How do I convert a conditional offer to unconditional?+

Submit evidence that you have met every condition listed: final transcripts and certificates, English test score or MOI letter, completed Foundation or pre-sessional course, paid tuition deposit and any other items the university requested. Once verified, the university issues an Unconditional Offer Letter.

Can I get a UK Student Visa with a conditional offer?+

No. UK universities can only issue a CAS based on an unconditional offer. Without a CAS, the Home Office will not consider your Student Visa application. You must convert your conditional offer to unconditional first.

What does 'unconditional subject to deposit' mean?+

It is an unconditional offer that still requires a small administrative step like paying the tuition deposit, sending a passport copy or providing original transcripts. UCAS displays these as Unconditional (U) on UCAS Hub, but the university cannot issue your CAS until the admin condition is met.

What happens if I do not meet my conditional offer requirements?+

You have three options: ask the university for discretion (often granted if you are close), accept a Foundation or pre-sessional English alternative to keep the university, or enter UCAS Clearing to find a place at a different university. Email admissions within 24 hours of results for the best chance of discretion.
