UK Student Visa: Essential Do's and Don'ts

Applying for a UK Student Visa (formerly Tier 4) can feel overwhelming. Here's a clear guide to help you get it right.

    ✅ Do's

    1. Apply Early

Apply as soon as you receive your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts.

    2. Provide Complete Financial Evidence

Show that funds have been held for at least 28 consecutive days. The closing balance date must be within 31 days of your application.

    3. Use Official Sources

Only rely on UKVI and university official websites for visa guidance. Avoid unofficial agents or forums with outdated information.

    4. Keep All Original Documents

Maintain originals of your academic transcripts, English test scores, passport, and financial statements.

    5. Attend Your Biometrics Appointment

Book this promptly after submitting your online application. Delays can push back your visa decision.

    6. Register with the Police (If Required)

Some nationalities must register with the police within 7 days of arrival. Check if this applies to you.

    ❌ Don'ts

    1. Don't Overstay Your Visa

Your visa has a specific end date. Overstaying, even by one day, can result in a ban from re-entering the UK.

    2. Don't Work Beyond Your Permitted Hours

Most student visas allow 20 hours/week during term and full-time during holidays. Exceeding this is a serious visa violation.

    3. Don't Provide False Information

Any discrepancy in your application can lead to refusal and a 10-year ban from UK visa applications.

    4. Don't Change Courses Without Informing UKVI

If you switch courses or universities, you'll need a new CAS and may need to apply for a new visa.

    5. Don't Ignore the IHS Payment

The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is mandatory. Pay it during your online application as without it, your application won't be processed.

    6. Don't Travel Without Your BRP

Your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is your proof of immigration status in the UK. Carry it when travelling.
