    What Is an HND Top-Up?

An HND (Higher National Diploma) is a 2-year, Level 5 qualification awarded by Pearson BTEC, SQA or international partners. It is equivalent to the first two years of a UK Bachelor's degree.

A Top-Up degree is a 1-year, Level 6 programme (final year of a Bachelor's) designed specifically for HND holders. You enter directly into Year 3, study honours-level modules and graduate with a full UK Bachelor's degree (BA Hons or BSc Hons).

This route is ideal if you:

  1. Hold an HND from any UK or international Pearson BTEC centre
  2. Hold a Foundation Degree (FdA, FdSc) or DipHE
  3. Have a 2-year Associate Degree from countries like the US, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Nigeria
  4. Want a UK degree in one year rather than three

  15. You can work 20 hours per week during term time and full-time in vacations
  16. You qualify for the Graduate Route (PSW) for 2 years after graduating (for courses starting before 1 January 2027)
  17. You can bring dependants only if your course is PhD or a research-based postgraduate (Top-Up Bachelor's is not eligible for dependants under 2024 rules)
  18. Why a Top-Up Is a Smart Move

  19. Convert your HND into a full UK Bachelor's degree in 1 year
  20. Qualify for direct entry to UK Master's programmes afterwards
  21. Access the Graduate Route post-study visa
  22. Often cheaper than starting a Bachelor's from Year 1 (1 year of fees instead of 3)
