November vs January Intake UK 2026: Which Should You Choose?

If you missed September 2026, your two realistic options are November 2026 or January 2027. Both are "top-up" intakes designed to fill seats — but they suit very different students. This side-by-side compares deadlines, courses, cost, visa timing and offer chances so you can pick the right one.

    The Quick Verdict

  1. Choose November 2026 if your documents, funds and IELTS are ready today and you want to save 2-3 months.
  2. Choose January 2027 if you need more prep time, a scholarship, or a wider course choice at public universities.
  3. Head-to-Head Comparison

    Course Availability

November is dominated by business, computing, law, health and MBA at private and modern providers. Almost no research Masters, engineering, medicine, architecture or creative arts run in November.

January opens up: many public universities (Coventry, Northumbria, De Montfort, Aston, Portsmouth, Kingston, Middlesex, Ulster, Solent, Bedfordshire, Roehampton) run full postgraduate portfolios. You can still study Data Science, Cyber Security, Public Health, International Business, Marketing, Accounting & Finance, Nursing top-ups and many engineering conversion Masters.

    Visa & CAS Timing

Both intakes are tight, but January has more buffer:

  4. November: application → CAS → 28-day funds proof → visa → arrival, all in about 4-5 weeks. Any delay kills the intake.
  5. January: you have 6-8 weeks of headroom. If IELTS retake is needed or funds arrive late, you can still make it.
  6. Money Considerations

  7. Tuition: identical at most providers for either intake — you pay per academic year, not per intake month.
  8. Deposit: £3,000-£5,000 payable to secure CAS for either intake.
  9. Maintenance: the 28-day rule needs £10,539 (outside London) or £13,761 (inside London) for a 9-month course. Same for both intakes.
  10. Flights: November flights are cheaper than December/January; January flights spike around New Year.
  11. Career & Post-Study Work Impact

Both intakes qualify for the Graduate Route (2-year post-study work visa). Course length is the same. The main difference:

  12. November start finishes in October/November 2027 → you enter the job market with the autumn graduate recruitment cycle.
  13. January start finishes in December 2027 / January 2028 → you miss the main autumn recruitment cycle by a few weeks and target the spring milkround instead.
  14. For finance, consulting and Big 4 roles, an autumn finish (November start) is often slightly better. For tech, healthcare and general career switchers, it makes no practical difference.

    Who Should Pick November

  15. Documents complete, IELTS 6.5+ already in hand
  16. Funds already in a qualifying account for 28+ days
  17. Targeting private-provider MBA, MSc Business, MSc Computing or top-up degrees
  18. Wants to enter UK job market in autumn 2027 recruitment cycle
  19. Who Should Pick January

  20. Still needs to sit or retake IELTS
  21. Funds arriving from a sponsor in November/December
  22. Wants a public university (Coventry, Northumbria, De Montfort, Aston, Portsmouth)
  23. Wants a wider course choice (STEM, health, creative)
  24. Wants to spend Christmas at home before travelling
  25. Realistic Timelines

    November 2026 target:

  26. This week: submit application + IELTS booked
  27. 1-2 weeks: conditional offer received
  28. 3 weeks: IELTS + deposit paid + unconditional offer
  29. 4-5 weeks: CAS + funds cleared 28 days + visa submitted
  30. Early November: arrival + enrolment
  31. January 2027 target:

  32. October 2026: submit application
  33. Late October: conditional offer received
  34. November: IELTS + deposit + unconditional + CAS
  35. December: funds proof + visa + biometrics
  36. Early January: arrival + enrolment
  37. Bottom Line

November wins on speed. January wins on choice. If you can genuinely say "everything is ready today", go November. If not, do not force it — a rushed November application that fails costs you both intakes because the January deadline is only 6 weeks later.
