Quick answer: You can join the UK January 2027 intake without IELTS if the university accepts a medium of instruction (MOI) letter, your school or degree English grade, or its own internal English test. This is common at Huddersfield, Bangor and Wolverhampton for applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore and other countries where degrees are taught in English. It is not a visa loophole: the university must still be satisfied you meet the English requirement, and for courses below degree level a SELT test is mandatory. Confirm your route in writing before you skip a test, because a rejected MOI letter in November will cost you the January start.

    What "without IELTS" actually means

    There are four legitimate routes:

  1. MOI letter - a signed letter from your previous institution confirming the whole degree was taught and assessed in English, usually accepted if you graduated within the last two to five years.
  2. School English grade - WAEC or NECO English at credit C6 or above for Nigeria and Ghana, or Class 12 English at 60 to 70 percent for India, accepted by many universities for postgraduate entry.
  3. University internal English test - a short online test set by the university itself, marked in days.
  4. Alternative SELT or accepted test - PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert, or Duolingo where the university accepts it. This is not "no test", but it is faster and cheaper than IELTS in most countries.
  5. Where the rules are strict

  6. Courses below degree level, including foundation and pre-Masters, require an approved SELT with UKVI approved status. An MOI letter is not enough.
  7. Nursing, midwifery and other regulated healthcare courses need IELTS 7.0 or the NMC equivalent, with no exceptions.
  8. Russell Group universities including Queen's University Belfast usually require a test, typically IELTS 6.5 with no band below 5.5 or 6.0.

    Get it confirmed in writing

Ask the admissions team, or ask us, for a written confirmation that your specific document is acceptable for your specific course before you rely on it. The single most damaging mistake in a January cycle is submitting an MOI letter in early November, having it rejected, and then discovering the next available IELTS slot is after the CAS deadline.

What a good MOI letter contains

  10. Official letterhead and a verifiable signatory with contact details
  11. Your full name, student number and dates of study
  12. The full title of your qualification
  13. An explicit statement that teaching, assessment and examinations were entirely in English
  14. Date of issue, ideally within the last three months
  15. Timeline if you still need a test

If your MOI route fails, you need roughly four weeks: one to two weeks to get a test slot, one week for results, and one week for the university to reissue the offer. In a January 2027 cycle that means any English uncertainty must be resolved by mid October 2026, not November.

You still need the visa funds

Skipping IELTS does not change the money. You still show GBP 1,136 per month outside London for up to 9 months, so GBP 10,224, or GBP 1,483 per month in London, held for 28 consecutive days, plus outstanding tuition.

    Apply with us

We check your English evidence before submission and get written confirmation from admissions, so you never find out in November that your letter is not accepted. No agent fee.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for the UK January 2027 intake without IELTS?+

Yes, where the university accepts a medium of instruction letter, your school or degree English grade, or its own internal English test. This is common at Huddersfield, Bangor and Wolverhampton for applicants whose degree was taught in English.

What is a medium of instruction letter?+

An official letter from your previous institution, on letterhead with a verifiable signatory, confirming that teaching, assessment and examinations were entirely in English, including your name, dates of study and qualification title. Most universities want it issued recently and expect you to have graduated within the last two to five years.

Which January 2027 courses always require IELTS?+

Courses below degree level, including foundation and pre-Masters, require an approved UKVI SELT. Nursing, midwifery and other regulated healthcare courses require IELTS 7.0 or the NMC equivalent. Queen's University Belfast normally requires a test at IELTS 6.5.

What happens if my MOI letter is rejected?+

You will need roughly four weeks to book a test, get results and have the offer reissued. In a January 2027 cycle that means English evidence must be settled by mid October 2026, otherwise the CAS deadline is missed.
