English Test Exemptions at UK Universities
Not every international student needs to sit an English language test. Here are the most common exemptions.
1. Majority English-Speaking Countries
Students from countries like the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and many Caribbean nations are typically exempt.
2. English-Medium Education
If you completed your previous degree (or secondary education) entirely in English at a recognised institution, many universities will waive the requirement. You'll usually need a letter from your institution confirming the medium of instruction.
3. UK Qualifications
Students who have completed GCSEs, A-Levels, or a UK degree are generally exempt.
4. Recent English Test Scores
Most universities accept test scores taken within the last 2 years. Some accept scores up to 3 years old.
5. Pre-Sessional English Courses
If you narrowly miss the required score, many universities offer pre-sessional English programmes (4-20 weeks) that can substitute for the test requirement.
6. University-Specific Internal Tests
Some universities offer their own English assessment as an alternative to standardised tests. These are often free or low-cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which UK universities do not require IELTS in 2026?+
Many UK universities including the University of Bolton, Teesside, Birmingham City, Coventry, Bedfordshire, Greenwich and Hertfordshire offer English test waivers when you have studied in English-medium education for at least 2 to 3 years, or have a recognised secondary qualification in English from countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, India (CBSE/ISC English), Pakistan and the Caribbean.
What proves I do not need an English test?+
Universities typically accept an official medium-of-instruction (MOI) letter from your previous school or university, your transcript showing English as the medium, or a recognised exemption qualification such as WAEC English at C6 or above, CBSE Class 12 English at 70 percent or above, or HKDSE English at Level 4.
Does the UKVI also waive the English test?+
If you are from a UKVI-listed majority-English-speaking country, the visa English requirement is automatically waived. Otherwise the university decides on academic English, but you still need to meet UKVI's B1 or B2 spoken English standard for the Student Visa.
Is a university English waiver valid for a CAS and visa?+
Yes. If your university is a Student Sponsor and they confirm on the CAS that you meet their English requirement (with or without a test), the Home Office accepts that decision for the visa.
