    UK University Entry Requirements Explained

UK university entry requirements have three layers: academic grades, English language proficiency, and subject prerequisites. Here is exactly how each works in 2026, with country-by-country equivalents.

    1. Academic Grades

UK universities express requirements in different ways depending on the level.

    Undergraduate (Bachelor's)

  1. A-Levels: e.g. AAA (Russell Group), BBB (most universities), CCC (post-92 universities)
  2. UCAS Tariff Points: e.g. 144 (AAA), 120 (BBB), 96 (CCC)
  3. International Baccalaureate: e.g. 36 (top), 28 (typical)
  4. BTEC Extended Diploma: e.g. DDD (top), MMM (typical)
  5. Postgraduate (Master's)

  6. UK degree classification: First, 2:1, 2:2 or 3rd
  7. Most Master's require a 2:1 (around 60 percent UK average)
  8. Some accept 2:2 (50-59 percent), especially conversion courses
  9. 2. International Qualification Equivalents
