    UCAS for International Students

UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the centralised system for applying to undergraduate courses at UK universities. International students can use UCAS exactly like UK students, with a few key differences.

What UCAS Is (and Is Not)

  1. Is: The single platform used for almost all UK undergraduate applications
  2. Is not: Used for postgraduate courses (you apply directly to each university)
  3. Is not: A visa or scholarship system
  4. Step 1: Register on UCAS Hub

Sign up at ucas.com. You will need:

  5. Personal details
  6. Email address
  7. Buzzword from your school or college (if applying through one)
  8. If you are an independent international applicant, you can apply without a buzzword.

    Step 2: Application Fee 2026

  9. GBP 28.50 for up to 5 choices
  10. Fee waivers are not generally available to international students
  11. Step 3: Choose Up to 5 Courses

  12. You can mix universities and subjects
  13. You can choose at most 4 Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary or Vet Science courses
  14. All 5 choices are visible to universities only after you submit
  15. Step 4: Key Deadlines for 2026 Entry

    DeadlineApplies to

    |---|---|

15 October 2025Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary29 January 2026Most other undergraduate courses30 June 2026Late international applications (still considered)4 July 2026Clearing opens for unplaced applicants

International applications received between January and June are usually still considered if places remain.

Step 5: Write Your Personal Statement

  16. 4,000 characters or 47 lines, whichever comes first
  17. One statement covers all 5 choices
  18. Focus on why this subject and what you have done to prepare
  19. Avoid country-specific cliches and translated idioms
  20. Step 6: Reference Letter

  21. One reference is required, usually from a teacher or academic
  22. For independent applicants, an employer or tutor can write it
  23. Step 7: Submit and Track

  24. After submission UCAS sends your application to all chosen universities
  25. Track responses in UCAS Hub
  26. Universities reply with Conditional, Unconditional, or Unsuccessful
  27. Step 8: Reply to Offers

Once all decisions are in, you select:

  28. Firm choice (CF/UF): your top pick
  29. Insurance choice (CI/UI): backup with lower requirements
  30. Step 9: Confirmation and Clearing

  31. Confirmation (after results in August) checks if you met conditions
  32. Clearing lets unplaced applicants find available courses from July to October
  33. When to Apply Directly Instead of UCAS

Many UK universities accept direct international applications for undergraduate courses, especially:

  34. Post-92 universities
  35. Foundation Year programmes
  36. January and May intakes
  37. Top-up degrees (final year only)
  38. Direct application has no UCAS fee, often faster decisions, and is the standard route for postgraduate.

Common UCAS Mistakes by International Applicants

  39. Using a translated personal statement word-for-word
  40. Listing 5 wildly different subjects (universities notice)
  41. Missing the 15 October Medicine deadline
  42. Forgetting to convert grades to UCAS Tariff Points where needed
  43. Not paying the IHS later (separate to UCAS, but often forgotten)
  44. Should You Use UCAS or Apply Directly?
