Quick answer: In the UK you can start a degree as a mature student aged 21 or over with no A-Levels and no previous degree. Designated higher education providers admit mature students on work experience, a personal statement and a short interview instead of UCAS Tariff points, and if you have Home fee status you can fund the whole thing with a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan so nothing is payable upfront. Intakes run several times a year, so you can usually start within weeks. Start your mature student application here.

What Counts as a Mature Student in the UK?

A mature student is anyone aged 21 or over at the start of an undergraduate course. There is no upper limit. Universities and colleges routinely enrol students in their thirties, forties and fifties, and roughly a third of UK undergraduates are classed as mature.

You are likely in one of these situations:

  1. You left school after GCSEs or at Level 3 and went straight into work.
  2. You started a course years ago and never finished it.
  3. You have years of real work experience but no formal qualification to prove it.
  4. You are changing career and the new job advert asks for a degree.
  5. All four are normal admissions cases, not problems.

The Entry Routes if You Have No A-Levels

    RouteWhat it isWho it suits
Degree with foundation yearA four-year degree with a built-in first year that gets you up to degree levelNo Level 3 qualifications at allHND (Level 4/5)Two years of higher education, a qualification in its own rightWant a shorter commitment firstTop-up degree (Level 6)One year to convert an HND or Level 5 into a full honours degreeAlready hold a Level 5Access to HE DiplomaA one-year college course designed for adults returning to studyHappy to spend a year preparing firstRecognition of prior learningCredit awarded for documented professional experienceLong career in the same field

The fastest routes for most people are the foundation-year degree and the HND, because they need no prior Level 3 qualification and they start several times a year.

    How Admissions Actually Judge You

Without A-Levels, the assessment shifts to things you can control:

  6. Your personal statement. Say why this subject, why now, and what you will do with it. Specific beats polished.
  7. Your work history. Supervising a team, handling money, dealing with customers or running a shift all map onto business, health and computing degrees.
  8. A short interview. Usually 15 to 20 minutes, often by phone or video. It is a conversation about motivation and commitment, not a test.
  9. Basic literacy and numeracy. Some providers set a short written or numeracy exercise.
  10. There is no UCAS Tariff calculation to pass. If you still want to know where you stand on points, the UCAS points calculator explains the system.

Can You Afford It? Usually, Yes

If you have Home fee status (British and Irish citizens, settled or pre-settled status, Indefinite Leave to Remain, refugee or humanitarian protection status, normally with three years of UK residence) you can apply to Student Finance England for:

  11. a tuition fee loan, paid direct to the provider, with nothing upfront from you
  12. a maintenance loan for living costs, paid into your bank account each term
  13. non-repayable extras if they apply to you, including the Childcare Grant, Parents' Learning Allowance, Adult Dependants' Grant and Disabled Students' Allowance
  14. There is no upper age limit for a tuition fee loan. Maintenance loan entitlement has age-related rules in some cases, so check yours before you commit. The full breakdown with official links is in our mature student funding guide and on the scholarships and funding hub. You can estimate your living-cost loan with the maintenance loan calculator.

Repayment only starts once you earn above the repayment threshold for your plan, and it stops automatically if your income drops. Any remaining balance is written off after the term of your plan.

Do You Have to Give Up Your Job?

No. Most mature-friendly providers run block timetables, typically two or three days a week, including some evening and weekend teaching. That is the single biggest reason mature students choose them over a traditional campus university. Details are in study while you work.

    Where You Can Study

Campuses that specialise in mature admissions cluster in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, and they are commutable from surrounding towns such as Coventry, Dudley, Dewsbury, Bolton, Slough and Reading. Our detailed provider pages cover the Global Banking School and the wider mature student admissions route.

The Timeline: Weeks, Not a Year

Applications for these routes go direct to the provider, not through UCAS, which is why they move quickly.

    Common Worries, Answered Honestly

"I will be the oldest in the room." You will not. On mature-focused courses the average age is well above 25, and classmates are usually working adults with families.

"I have not studied for 20 years." Foundation years exist precisely for this. The first term is study skills, academic writing and getting your confidence back.

"What if I fail?" You can withdraw, and student finance entitlement rules mean a short false start does not usually end your options. Talk to the provider before you walk away.

"Is the degree respected?" Check the provider is a designated institution whose degrees are awarded or validated by a recognised UK university. Ask this question directly before you apply, and we will confirm it for you.
