Quick answer: Birmingham City University (BCU) is now open for the January 2027 intake for eligible undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate taught (PGT) programmes. You can either submit a new application or, if you already hold a September 2026 offer, request a deferment to January 2027 provided the same course runs in January. MRes programmes are not open for January applications yet and cannot be deferred from September, a new application will be needed once January MRes applications open.

Deferring From September 2026 to January 2027

If the same course is available in January, submit the deferment request and BCU will move your application.

If your course is not available in January, you can apply for an alternative course that does have a January 2027 start rather than lose the cycle.

If you hold an MRes offer, you cannot defer. Wait for January MRes applications to open and submit a new application.

Deferring is usually faster than a fresh application because your documents and qualification checks are already on file, but the deposit and CAS timeline restarts against the January deadlines.

Entry Requirements

Undergraduate: a recognised high school qualification such as A Levels, HSSC or WAEC, or a completed foundation programme. Direct Year 2 entry is possible with an HND or diploma in a related subject.

Postgraduate taught: a Bachelor degree, normally 2:2 or above. Three year Bachelor degrees from Pakistan, India, Nigeria and Bangladesh are considered.

English: usually IELTS 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each component for postgraduate entry and IELTS 6.0 for undergraduate, with subject exceptions.
