How to Study in the UK at 21+ Without A-Levels or a Degree (2026 Guide)
Quick answer
Yes. If you are 21 or over and you are a British national, hold Settled or Pre-Settled Status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), you can start a UK degree with no A-Levels, no formal qualifications and no previous degree. Universities and alternative providers admit you as a mature student on the basis of work and life experience, and Student Finance England pays your tuition fees directly to the provider. You do not pay anything up front.
At a glance
- Age: 21 or over on the first day of your course counts as a mature student

- Tuition: GBP 6,935 per year at alternative providers such as GBS, up to GBP 9,535 at traditional universities, all covered by a Tuition Fee Loan
- Maintenance Loan: up to GBP 13,762 per year in London, GBP 10,544 outside London, GBP 8,877 living at home
- Repayment: Plan 5, 9% of anything you earn over GBP 25,000 per year, written off after 40 years
Who counts as a mature student in the UK?
Anyone aged 21 or over at the start of an undergraduate course. There is no upper age limit. Around a quarter of UK undergraduates are mature students, and providers that specialise in them have entry processes built for people who left school without A-Levels.
Do I need A-Levels or a degree?
No. Most providers will accept a mature applicant on one of these routes:
- Work experience route. Two years or more of relevant employment, evidenced with a CV and an employer reference.
- Access to Higher Education Diploma. A one year, Level 3 course designed for adults returning to study. Worth up to 144 UCAS points.
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Your workplace training, NVQs, professional certificates or armed forces experience mapped against the first year of a degree.
- Foundation year or Year 0. A four year degree that starts with a preparation year, so no prior qualifications are required.
- HND then top-up. Study a two year Higher National Diploma and top up to a full Bachelor's in a third year.

How the money actually works
You never hand tuition money to the university. You apply at gov.uk/student-finance, Student Finance England pays the provider each term, and the Maintenance Loan lands in your bank account in three instalments. Repayment only starts the April after you graduate, and only if you earn over GBP 25,000. At GBP 30,000 a year you repay about GBP 37 a month.
Mature students may also qualify for extra grants that never have to be repaid: Childcare Grant (up to 85% of childcare costs), Parents' Learning Allowance, Adult Dependants' Grant and Disabled Students' Allowance.
