What Is IY1? International Year One, Foundation and Pre-Masters Entry Requirements 2027

    8/21/2026 9 min read

    Quick answer

If you do not meet direct entry, UK universities offer three pathway routes: an International Foundation Year (entry to year 1 of a degree), International Year One or IY1 (entry straight into year 2 of a degree), and a Pre-Masters (entry to a masters). IY1 means International Year One, and it is the fastest undergraduate route because it replaces the first year of your degree rather than sitting before it.

    What does IY1 mean?

IY1 is International Year One. You study a taught programme that carries the same credit weight as year 1 of the degree, with extra English and academic skills support, then progress directly into year 2 at the university. It saves a full year compared with a foundation year.

    Foundation vs IY1 vs Pre-Masters

    • International Foundation Year: usually 17+, entry from Year 11 or Year 12 results, progresses into year 1 of a bachelor degree. English typically IELTS for UKVI 4.5 to 5.5.
    • International Year One (IY1): usually 17+, entry from Year 12 (sometimes plus one year of further study), progresses into year 2. English typically IELTS for UKVI 5.5.
    • Pre-Masters: usually 19 to 20+, entry from a bachelor degree, HND or 3-year diploma, progresses into a masters. English typically IELTS for UKVI 5.5 to 6.0.

    English tests accepted

Most pathway centres require a UKVI-approved SELT: IELTS Academic for UKVI, Trinity ISE UKVI, Pearson PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert Academic SELT or PSI Skills for English UKVI. Some direct-application routes accept standard IELTS Academic or a waiver based on prior study in English.

    • You have Year 11 or lower grades: choose the Foundation Year
